The United Nations Security Council had a meeting after Israel made an airstrike in Doha the capital of Qatar. Israel said the target was Hamas leaders but the place was a home area where negotiation teams and their families were living. Qatar said this attack was a clear violation of its freedom and an effort to stop peace talks. Qatar also said that attacking a mediator means attacking peace.
Pakistan also gave its view. Pakistan said the attack was illegal, against Qatar’s freedom, and dangerous for normal people. Pakistan said the attack broke international law because civilians could be harmed. Pakistan also said that attacking a mediator is the same as trying to stop peace talks.
Israel answered by saying that just like the United States killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan it also has the right to attack Hamas leaders anywhere, because terrorists should not have safe places. Pakistan rejected this example and said it was wrong and funny. Pakistan said the two cases are not the same and accused Israel of trying to hide its illegal actions. Pakistan also told the world that it has already given many sacrifices in the fight against terrorism.
In the end, the Security Council and many countries showed worry. They said Qatar’s freedom must be respected, normal people must be protected and peace talks must continue.
Now from this meeting some important questions come;
Can the excuse of fighting terrorism allow a country to break another country’s freedom?
Is attacking a mediator the same as ending peace talks?
Can any country attack inside another country?
Will the world only give words or will it take real action against Israel?
If the world stays silent today then in the future strong countries may also use the name of fighting terrorism to attack any state and break its freedom. Israel has already been breaking many rules of international law. It has ignored the decisions of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the International Criminal Court (ICC). It has continued to occupy land, attack civilians, and silence human rights groups and media. These actions show that without punishment Israel feels free to break rules again and again. If the world does not act now, the same will happen in the future and international law will lose its value.
